Frequently Asked Questions

Will I need to get in the water? Yes. We encourage parents to remain in the water as long as possible for a range of reasons.

1.     Safety – Children under the age of 4 who can’t swim are particularly vulnerable. Having a parent in the water ensures safety during the class.

2.     More practice – means more improvement. One on one learning beats waiting for turns and increased activity in the water.  This has proven highly successful in our program

3.     Parental Learning – Many parents learn more about teaching and the water, improving their ability to guide their children outside of lessons.

What are the Parents / Guardians role during class time?

Your role is to support your child during the class to maximum the learning experience from every class. While some classes can become noisy & overwhelming, it’s important to keep calm, listen to your instructor and practice well within the group.

What is the temperature of the pool?

Our water temperature is maintained at approximately 30 degrees throughout the week and a little warmer on the weekends, which is suitably comfortable for babies & toddlers.

What should we wear?

Parents should dress children in regular tight-fitting swimwear.

‘Aqua Nappies’ are available for purchase if you concerned about little accidents.

Can we play before or after the class?

Due to workplace safety rules, we do not permit ‘Free Play’ outside of class times. Parents should wait with children on pool deck until their teacher is ready for them. After class parents should also leave the water immediately to allow the next class to start without delay or distraction.

What if I cannot swim?

Our Pool depth ranges from 1m to 1.4m, so in most cases, all parents should feel comfortable in this depth of water around 1.2m.  If you feel uncomfortable at any time, please communicate any concerns with your instructor who will amend the class activity to suit your needs.  Irrespective of your swimming experience, its important to exude confidence when with your child in the water.

When can my child go into a class by themselves.

3 Years old, if they have achieved the Baby Graduate – Rainbow Fin Certificate

4 Years old, if they have not achieved the Rainbow Fin.

In some extenuating circumstances, we may make exemptions.

What Training do the teachers have?

All Instructors are Austswim qualified and First aid trained with many of our instructors holding higher levels of teaching and water safety qualifications. All Instructors and coaches must undertake mandatory in-house specialist training before taking classes and regular in-house training throughout the year.
